Josh Davy is a living enigma; he confounds and horrifies the very society he is trying to infiltrate. Half man, half machine, and half proboscis monkey, he has lived among us (poorly disguised) for 36 years. His road to world domination began with a very brief attempt at higher education at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Art in beautiful downtown Cleveland. As his nefarious plot began to take form he realized that an MFA would do little to cover his suspiciously high electric bill, or even pay for 3 packs of Top Ramen a day. He left college and has undertaken numerous menial tasks for monetary gain in the interim. From time to time he has delved into the seedy undercurrents of society, lurking about art studios, galleries and prisons trying to recruit followers whenever he can. Ready now to make his move, any money the good people of Denver spend on his questionably themed and poorly executed works of “art” will be put to good use bringing about the end of life as we know it. When pressed for a comment Josh said, “The growing popularity of the e-book is proof that society has traveled down a dark road from which there is no return.”

Mr. Davy is currently back in college studying mechanical engineering, which he suspects will be useful for overthrowing stuff and making money. He lives in Longmont with his son Jacob.

I fell so in love with this place that I put in for a transfer and moved here in 1971. For the past 43 years, I have photographed from Denver, to La Junta, to Cortez, to Craig, to Sterling, and a lot of places in between. For this show, I am documenting some things that have totally disappeared, some that have changed almost beyond recognition, and some that will never change. For natives and long time residents, this will be a trip down memory lane. The newer arrivals will see into some of the past of our great city and state. I have invited some participants from the recent 40 West “Traveling Route 40″ show to add their photos to mine and fill in some of the areas I have not covered well. Thanks to Laura Phelps Rogers, Jules Byerlein, Michael Calanan, Kendall Gelner, Paul Wedlake, Ken Parks, Dane “Colfax” Stephenson, Ken Takahashi, and Steve Kindsfather for sharing your work with NEXT Gallery.

Their work is an exploration of culture and social morals, which they cast animal-humanoids to contrast a view of humanity. v2r2 has been in the habit of making art since she can remember. Besides artwork, she is passionate about world cultures, nature and the mysteries of existence. v2r2 is a classically trained oil painter and former padawan of Jedi master John Hull. She attained her B.F.A. in 2008 from the University of Colorado Denver, graduating with highest honors. v2r2 brings the traditions of formalism to the collaboration along with adventurous spirit.

danma “The Long Journey Back to the Middle”

danma has a background in various arts (watercolor paintings & Chinese kung fu), which started from scribbles & doodles. He later got a little more serious with traditional portrait photography dealing with Asian identity politics. danma then after, leveled-up by attaining an M.F.A in 2006 from the University of Illinois, where he explored video, sculpture, and installation art. danma brings to the collaboration a non-traditional framework of curiosity and a thirst for the ridiculous. danma has shown nationally and internationally for 13 years. As a team, their work reaps the rewards from the dynamics of negotiation, challenges to one another’s ideas and an unpretentious attitude towards the new, daring and experimental. The combined appreciation of classical, fine art and low-brau, urban/street art charges their aesthetic with an unfiltered, savory, flavor-packet.

Her group and solo exhibitions include those at Morgan Art Space, Greenpoint Gallery, Brooklyn Fireproof, BRIC Rotunda Gallery, Airplane, and STOREFRONT Bushwick all NY; Unimedia Modern Contemporary Art, Genoa, Italy, and Galerie Zurcher, Paris, France. Burgay is a teaching artist working in NYC public schools through the Studio In A School program.

Interior and exterior landscapes are created through a process of cutting, decontextualizing and layering fragments of paper images, fabric, and other materials. Elements of the human and the natural world are combined in collages and sculptures that explore the cyclical nature of life, death and decay, the states of change and flux beings exist in, and the possibility of transcending the earthly realm. Similarities are revealed between our structures and organs, and those of all things that grow. The processes of these internal mechanisms point to our lack of control over the fundamentals of life- our nature to grow, deteriorate and decay over time.

Bibbiana Tanina Mele - Mongobi

Mongobì is Bibbiana Tanina Mele an italian artist. I was born in Sardinia and am living and working in Florence. I have attended the Art Institute in Nuoro and graduated as a Master of Arts. Then I moved to Florence, made studies at the Faculty of Architecture and at the Faculty of History of Arts graduating in Museology. After that I have specialized in Contemporary Art. Generally my creativity is mostly oriented toward the collage, but also photography, drawing, painting and sculpture. Much of my work revolves around the idea of waste and loss, poor materials.

What’s collage for me? With this technique I want to affect reality, shape it, mold it as I like it. With collages I always start from reality but I discussing boundaries, I change it. I rebirth the reality, I rage at her with a cutter.

The practice of collage is a eulogy of the fragment, and the residual. In the same time is a desperate search for completeness. If on one hand the residue is isolated by extrapolating it from its original context, on the other it becomes necessary to integrate it, to marry it with something else. In this way, the reconstitution of the fragment is put in place like a physical attraction.

As a kid growing up in Denver, I was pretty bright and a natural storyteller. Adolescent life in the city provided ample freedom, trauma and violence to inspire my creations, which have always been eccentric and somewhat sinister. Before high school I wrote horror stories and poetry with aspirations of being an author. It was a ceramics class as a freshman in high school that set my life’s work onto an alternate course of storytelling. I fell in love with objects and dedicated my life to manipulating various materials while earning my BFA in Sculpture from Metropolitan State University. Now, my stories are told through mixed media sculpture.

They say that the human soul keeps a record of great pain and great beauty. There is a very fine filament stretched between those intense perceptions, and if you drag a line of technology across that invisible strand, the point where they cross is the spot where the crucible of art boils up its salves and potions from mixtures of raw emotion and psychic scar tissue. A story is born. While Thanatos (death) can snatch a human, a story eludes his grasp. Art is my life. No other calling allows me to heal my wounds in broad daylight for all the world to see, to internalize and remember, to build and reflect upon, and to possibly engage in such a visceral reaction that a moment of healing self-awareness is triggered. I have no choice but to make art. Art is my remedy, my salvation, the fiber that stretches between my soul and humanity.

This included figuring out how to discipline myself to create art on my own time and with no professors’ or colleagues’ critiques.
Patrice Soehnlein

Patrice Soehnlein is an artist and illustrator born in 1986 in Madison, Wisconsin. She received her BS in graphic design from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and works as a freelance designer in Minneapolis.

The aptitude human beings possess for engineering, constructing and repairing machinery, such as televisions and airplanes, is immense. Yet, the enigmatic challenge present within engineering, constructing and repairing our own bodies is perhaps equally as immense. Body : Part visually examines this irony with collages representing ten human organs. Each organ is constructed from mechanical diagrams in which the function of the machinery in the diagrams is analogous to the function of the organ (the heart consists of engine diagrams; the reproductive organs copy machines). The aberrant silhouettes of the organs represent science’s imperfect attempts at mimicking biological formation, while the muted, corporeal colors of the paper are juxtaposed by a slight mechanical sheen. Body : Part will perhaps encourage viewers to ponder the human race’s tenuous grasp of its own architecture.

Pat Isaacs

I live in a high touch world of sensory awareness and tactile expression. Texture in my abstract collage paintings is built with layers of acrylic paint, fiber and paper. As each layer dries my hand strokes the canvas giving me somatic feedback for the next layer. Eventually a painting feels complete when the elements are incorporated onto the surface, intriguing in shape and barely veiled by paint. Inspiration flows from cycles in nature, my collection of old books, prints, fiber, metal, and other wrappings of daily life.

In our current American culture, fear has infiltrated our daily lives and created comfortable divisions between ourselves and others. The fear of failure, judgment, and atrocity infects decision-making like a habitual disorder without possibility of rehabilitation. As with any addiction, our dependence upon fear cannot be overcome without first recognizing its existence and analyzing its function within our society. My current work investigates how fear operates within the relationships between the individual, the collective, and others.

Seeking Kali

Seeking Kali is three artists: William Evertson (US), Ria Vanden Eynde (Belgium) and Susan Shulman (Canada) who in 2010 explored connecting their individual creative processes through social media platforms to create bodies of work involving traditional and non-traditional art forms. These social media platforms quickly became virtual studio spaces that the three artists used to invite other artists to come into and collaborate.

Our photo collage graphic novels are equal parts art criticism, art history and satire.

Like all artists, our Seeking Kali collective shares the frustrations of endless rounds of grant applications, presentations to galleries, promotion and still having the energy to produce art. There has to be more to it than luck, persistence and talent. We’ve put our heads together and come to some startling conclusions. In the Kalicorp Art Mysteries we share what we’ve learned about the treacherous place known as … ARTWORLD …
Each issue follows our explorations into Art World and features many fine under-represented artists as themselves or as guest villains. We include links to their work so be sure to investigate their real identities. As luck would have it the real art world is so full of controversy that each issue also contains timely avenues for ‘ripped from the headlines’ excitement.

Susan Donatucci

I am an Assistant Professor (Online) at The Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. Teaching foundations studies has simplified my own art process and brought it back to the basics: drawing and design.

n February of 2010, I spent a month at the Vermont Studio Center fulfilling a 30-day residency award. During this residency my whole idea of art changed: I stopped making art about myself and, instead, made art about the world I live in.

Drawing is the constant material in my work. I explore drawing with collage and appropriate images to discuss personal relationships to the natural world and to our cultural obsession with youth and plastic surgery: and how some cosmetic surgery thins the line between beautiful and grotesque. I have spent years in universities studying art with determination where I acquired a BFA in painting and an MA in sculpture. I have also won a Departmental Award for Painting. Currently, I live and work in Denver, CO. with my husband.

I appropriate images from the Internet and from magazines to include in my collage series. These images are ironically far from perfect and explore the fine line between beauty and grotesque and what measure a person goes to, to stop time. I discuss our society’s obsession with perfection and youth. Using appropriated imagery is symbolic as it refers to advertising: what we are subconsciously absorbing on a day to day basis, what often leaves us feeling fragmented, and what makes us yearn for more.

Each project consists of multiple works, hung in a grid format, often consisting of 100 or more pieces. The reason for this display is to emphasize the magnitude of the issue, to stress time, and to build a relationship between stories. My work sets out to take the seriousness out of it, to lighten the burden of societal pressure to be beautiful, thin, and perfect. At the same time my work educates my audience to accept that what normal is, is far from perfect. I am currently working on combining appropriated images, collage, and hand drawn elements on Mylar. I like the idea that the image can be suggestive and transparent: This process emphasizes the abnormal that is very appropriate.

Vija Rogozina (Deja Vi foto), CO,USA, YAY BACON!, 2011, photographic print on canvas, $300

Vija Rogozina

A spoonful of neo-dada + a touch of deviancy + a hint of melancholy + a lot of infinity

My foto-creations belong to dream-like suggestive universe of symbols and hidden meanings. As long as I remember myself I was always fascinated by black and white photography, especially by the faded, haunting photo images. I challenge myself to infuse contemporary imagery with this dreamy nostalgic feel and create somewhat bizarre, surreal visual metaphors without employing any digital effects. In short, I like to experiment and venture into the otherworldly visual domain with the minimalistic use of modern technology.

First I come up with an idea that I would like to communicate visually, then I manually arrange collage elements, taking advantage of the natural and artificial lights, transparent layers and any prop materials supporting the visual metaphor. Finally I capture the image digitally, have it printed on canvas or cotton watercolor paper, which results in ‘non-photographic’ photograph. In my art I aspire to touch something inside the viewer, to plant a question mark, trigger a memory or a sense of recognition (Déjà vu).

I’m also a video-maker, a non-fiction writer and a dance performer collaborating with avant-garde musicians, filmmakers, writers, poets, sculptors, designers, yogis, shamans, visionaries, troubadours and dreamers of all walks of life.

Zach Collins

Zach Collins was born in Grinnell, Iowa in 1977. He received his BA in Fine Arts from Upper Iowa University and his MA from the University of Iowa. He is currently living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Where he is pursuing a MFA degree at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Upon arriving at M.C.A.D. in August 2011 Zach’s main focus switched from digital collage to analog collage. The switch was influenced by revisiting a childhood car accident and sparked a new passion for the process of analog collage. He started sharing his work online in 2011, and presented with inspiration and encouragement from the online art community. This has lead to doing collaborations between several artists. By working this way he is learning new and different ways to visualise thoughts, feelings, and ideas, which adds to and influences his artistic way of thinking. He has exhibited his work internationally and as his artwork continues to develop hopes work and shows will follow.

My work is an introspective and process-based investigation in uniting contrasting materials to form a completely new and visual whole. I take pleasure in working with found overlooked fragments, discarded objects and vintage imagery collected from off the street, magazines, and second hand stores. Embodying ideas of scattered memories, I consider my experiences and often explore themes of support versus restraint, bondage versus freedom, and tension versus nonchalance.

“Toys include all the narrowly defined things that we associate with play–dolls, dominoes, blocks–but a toy is a culturally complex object that more broadly describes a host of things whose central purpose is to accommodate our imagination and creativity. A toy has no concrete strategic goal outside its capacity to accommodate our imagination: the most seductive and popular toys provide rich creative possibilities to ponder and imagine the most consequential dimensions of identity ranging from gender to class. What defines something as a toy is not its location in the store or its identification as a toy by its manufacturer: it is instead the creative possibilities people can envision within an object.” -Paul Mullins, Professor of Anthropology, Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis
