ARTIST STATEMENT: Lately I’ve thought a lot about our current situation as humans on Earth, trying to shed an uncomfortable, self destructive lifestyle of hyper-consumption. My more abstract work is directed toward this change on a spiritual level. In my more literal works, I hope to convince the viewer of the value of reeducation. As my ideas about what existence means develops, my body of work develops along with me. These thoughts create a deep range of emotion so it’s not surprising to see this range in my paintings and drawings. In the backdrop of my process is always the importance of composition and technique.I am intrigued by layers. Layers can be built of paint, drawing, paper, styles and composition. Cutting back into the layers is another form of drawing and reveals surprises waiting underneath. Repetition is also another element in my work. This comes from enjoying both more realistic work and abstract work. So, sometimes I’ll paint or draw the same thing twice only in two very different ways. It’s a lot more fun and true to my nature as a person to do a lot of different things instead of all one style or all one subject.
